David Gimenez Carreras
Born in Barcelona, and nephew of the acclaimed tenor José Carreras, David Giménez Carreras studied at the Conservatori del Liceu, Barcelona, at the Hochschule für Musik, Vienna, and at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Since making his debut with the Hannover NDR Orchestra in 1994, he has conducted worldwide the most prominent orchestras and soloists on the podiums of the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Hall, Salle Pleyel, Vienna Konzerthaus, Tokyo´s Suntory Hall, and at both New York’s Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. He has conducted the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Philharmonia, Orchestre de Paris, Chicago Symphony, Tokyo Symphony and other prestigious orchestras such Hamburg Symphony, Münchner Rundfunks, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden Orchestra or the New Japan Philharmonic.
Opera is understandably an important part of the Maestro Giménez Carreras’ performance schedule. He has conducted at the Vienna Staatsoper, Zurich Opera, Berlin Deutsche Oper, Stuttgart Opera, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, Madrid’s Teatro Real as well as in cities such as Las Palmas, Santander, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Washington, Baltimore, Portland and New Orleans. With an exceptional understanding of voice, the maestro has collaborated, among others, with Roberto Alagna, Angela Gheorghiu, Agnes Baltsa, Montserrat Caballé, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Juan Pons and Bryn Terfel.
In 2006, Maestro Giménez Carreras made a successful début at the Teatro Real in Madrid with La Bohème, were he was also in charge of En la buhardilla de La Bohème, a program targeted to young artists. The same season but within the symphonic repertoire, the maestro performed concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall, in Moscow with the Russia National Symphony Orchestra, in Barcelona with the Philarmonia Orchestra and with the Barcelona Symphony, and in the United States at the opening gala concert of Miami, Florida’s new Carnival Center for the Performing Arts. During 2006-07 Maestro Giménez Carreras’ concert appearances included those as Music Director of the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès, an Asian tour with performances in Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Taipei, as well as Carmen at the Festival Jardins de Cap Roig (Spain). During 2007-08 season, Maestro Giménez has performed, among other important engagements, Verdi Requiem with the OSV and a Christmas concert with José Carreras and Ainhoa Arteta at Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Romeo et Juliette at Teatro Villamarta in Jerez (Spain), concerts with Roberto Alagna at Teatro Real in Madrid and Théatre des Champs Elysées in Paris, Symphonic Concerts with OSV at Palau de la Música Catalana and with Bucarest Philharmonic at the Romanian Atheneum, a Zarzuela Gala at Festival Jardins de Cap Roig, and finally made his debut at Sevilla´s Teatro de la Maestranza.
His long list of future commitments includes the opening of 2008/09 season at the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao with Katiuska and a tour across Asia and Europe –among other cities in Viena (Konzerthaus), Moscow (Bolshoi), Tokyo (Suntory Hall),- with José Carreras. In 2009 he will conduct a Spanish tour with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, will return to New York´s Avery Fisher Hall, and conduct Aida and Faust in Romania and Spain. Giménez Carreras will also record a CD for Emi with the Spanish tenor Ismael Jordi.
In September 2007, he was appointed Permanent Guest Conductor of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra/George Enescu.
